Critical thinking: The power of asking questions

Critical thinking: The power of asking questions

“The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing.” ― Socrates

"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think." -Margaret Mead

Why is it important for us to ask questions?

In addition to finding answers, asking questions can lead to becoming critical of our assumptions, which leads to the discovery of alternative solutions.

To us, asking questions is an important aspect of learning. We learn, and what we learn helps us make better decisions. We have the choice of speaking up for ourselves and learning the truth.

Not every question is favorable to critical thought.

The greatest way to inquire is to use open questions. These types of questions need a higher level of thought and generally result in a longer response. Effective inquiries include the words "why" and "how."

It encourages people to think outside the box, reflect, share their thoughts and feelings. An empowering question does more than to show respect for the person. It makes a person become a problem solver and a critical thinker.

Is it, however, all about asking questions?

Not only that, but one must also be willing to listen.
